We’re going to have a look on ELMO and how he’s supporting you in the meetings to make them more efficient so let’s get started. Who of you has been in an unproductive meeting? Raise your hand!
Yes of course we’ve all been and there’s actually quite shocking data behind. Over 36 million meetings are happening every day and up to 283 billion US$ are lost each year because of unproductive meetings and this is in the U.S. only. So time to make your meetings more efficient!
What are the biggest problems? According to a survey from atlassian the top three things which are a problem are:
- they are unnecessary – 76%
- the people are not staying at the topic – 59%
- repetition of what was already said – 58%
So what are tricks to make your meeting more efficient? Reduce the time of the meeting so instead of 60 minutes maybe you can put it into 45 minutes. The second one is reducing the amount of attendances. Do we really need 10 people in the meeting or is maybe eight people enough? The third tip – and that’s what i want to talk about today – is to introduce ELMO. So first of all what does ELMO stand for? ELMO means “Enough. Let’s move on.”
When we introduce ELMO, perfectly we do it before the meetings so everyone is already aware of that muppet ELMO and we bring them into the meeting and normally i just put ELMO on the table and then he stands there. We make clear that ELMO means “Enough. Let’s move on.”, so we keep our focus, we don’t repeat ourselves, we go through the agenda step by step and not wasting any time. If anyone in the room thinks it’s time to raise ELMO maybe he just looks at ELMO or he touches ELMO or maybe he points ELMO into the direction of the person.
And that’s basically it. Introducing ELMO in front of the meeting and then bring ELMO into your meetings for remote setting. I also have ELMO with me and this is normally his place and most of the time people even don’t see it or I put my shoulder in front and only if I feel like oh maybe this is not target enough or maybe we’re wasting time then i put my shoulder away and then step by step making it more offensive to show here’s ELMO. And if that doesn’t work then we bring him just to the front and introducing ELMO.
What are the rules behind? Actually it’s just like introducing him. Enough, let’s move on. Everyone in the meeting is allowed to to raise ELMO. You should probably have your own set of rules. Normally it’s enough to just place him into the meeting room and people will be more focused.
So what are the results? First we are going to save quite a lot of money, just imagine – your meetings are five percent less unproductive – what you can save with this, have more time in priority list and working on that. Second your people will be probably more happy and productive because people are so frustrated of unproductive meetings and it actually holds them away from their work so if we can ease that with ELMO then introduce him. So what do you think, is that a trick? You want to introduce as well?
